The original IBM Personal Computer knows as the IBM PC model 5150 was the starting point for all modern PC's.  It led to IBM's XT (Model 5160) and then the IBM AT (Model 5170).  The IBM AT featured an Intel 80286 PC which was the first real processor to offer the ability to play games.  From this model on the IBM PC was cloned by many companies. By the time the 'clone' PC's were using Intel 80386 processors and EGA or VGA graphics many games were being developed for the PC format.  At first many were just conversions of Atari or Amiga titles but as the PC gained power both in terms of CPU and Graphics the development of new titles accelerated.

I have many fond memories of the first PC DOS based games.  I remember the first time I got a copy of the PD version of DOOM.  It drove me to understand coxial networking just to be able to play my mates head to head.

This new PC Abandonware Rom section is truly massive. 2802 PC Games totaling 8GB of data, mostly for DOS but also some for Windows 3.1/95.  A lot of these titles are not available on the web anywhere.  All of them I actually played at some time and quite a few I played to completion.  The best emulator to use these days is DOSBOX, however its more fun to buy, borrow or build up a Pentium II or III box and play them like they were intended. Here are some of my favourite games from the 1990's.
