The Fairchild Channel F was a game console released by Fairchild Semiconductor in 1976.  It had the distinction of being one of the first programmable ROM cartridge based video game.  Atari did not release the VCS until the next year.  Based on the F8 CPU invented by Robert Noyce before he left to start up his own company, Intel. Although the graphics were basic they were in colour which was a massive step forward from the PONG games of the time.  Fairchild later released the Channel F System II to compete with the Atari VCS, we all know who won..
