This list is based two articles by Dr. Kenneth E. Knight in DATAMATION:
"Changes in Computer Performance", Sept. 1966 and "Evolving Computer
Performance 1963-1967", Jan. 1968.

His study evaluated cost vs performace and is not necessarily meant
to be a history of the computer.

His criteria for inclusion to the list were:
1. General purpose digital computers;
2. One configuration chosen of memory size, IO, arithmetic and control;
3. Important modifications affecting performance added at a later
date considered a separate computer.

AFCno refers to a serial number which will be assigned when additions
to the list have ceased. For now an (*) will denote a machine not
on the Knight list.

KEKno refers to the serial number assigned to each computer type
by Dr. Knight.

The dates of introduction are defined as that when the completed
computer passed a minimal acceptance test.

I have added some which may or may not fit Knight's criteria or were
unknown to him. I have attempted to continue the list past 1967.

Thanks for additions and corrections to Tony Duell

Subject: Re: Big List - computer history

A quick perusal showed at least the following missing:

There were two models of the IBM 5100. I can't remember the model
number for the other one (5110?), although someone else here probably
can.

IBM System 23 Datamaster. I think circa 1979.

IBM System 34, 36, and 38. No idea when these showed up, just that
they post-dated the System 32.

IBM RT, the first of the RISC machines (may it rest in hell).

The Kim kit computer. This would have been around the same time as
the Apple I but after the Altair.

All of the Kaypro computers. The Kaypro II was probably the most
influential -- first introduced in '83. I suspect a lot of other CP/M
machines are missing.

DEC Rainbow, DECstation 5000, and all VAX models are missing. The VAX
11/7xx is kind of conspicuous.

The Interleaf machines (Clipper is still rather fast).

Sun 1, 2, 3 and 386i.

All of the Apollo machines.

That's enough for now; the list looks pretty good into the 70s.

jim frost

Pretty good list, however , far from every digital computer type made up to the posting time.

Seems like this maybe a dead thread but some of the z80 systems are missing.
Such as the Timex Sinclair, Sinclair zx81, Rainbow, Spectrum.
However the TRS-80 did make the list.
Then again there may be a few dozen others based on the Motorola 6800 that have been missed as well.
The 6502 chip gave us the golden era of 8-bits.
The Atari 400/800 released in 1979.
Apple I released in 1976/77 with Commodore next in '77

Thanks for the effort in the original post.

There are a few missing but unfortunately the guy that posted this 'Crusty' is no longer with us and so is unable to update this. It would be nice to remake and repost with the amended list if you wanted to do that.

sad thing is you could put 90 percent of them together in one box and still have less power and useability than a ps4 XB1 and your cell phone
"theres no point it telling me the wisdom of a fool cant and wont set me free"-new order
"its always easier and usually better to get forgiveness than permission"-various
