Yep, thats the problem erebus, after a long wait and much anticipation the bulldozer or FX CPUs are not offering enough of a performance boost over the current Intel i5 and i7 CPUs.

I know first hand all about this. My work rig is an overclocked Intel i5 2500k running at 4.50GHz all day long and is very fast and very stable. My home rig is an AMD Phenom II 1100T but it only overclocks to 4GHz and is not 100% stable.

I wish and want for AMD to come out with something better but alas it does not come.

HT, were/are the core temperature the same for both intel and AMD chips ?

Idel STD temps are lower for the Intel. In fact after overclocking the intel still runs cooler than the 1100T. That said, sometimes I swear that the ii00T running at 4GHz feels faster in real world apps than the i5 at 4.5GHz.

HT, I would like to know your oppinion on the following:

I'm don't play a LOT of games on my PC.. and those that I play don't require the most of a computer (oldies and sometimes World of Warcraft, Diablo, etc).

Now since I'm building the arcade cabinet we will have one computer 'less' to use as a PC. My wife also loves to do some simple gaming together with me. It's also easy to have an extra PC around for when a friend comes over to do some LAN games.

So I've thought about the next plan (please give me your thoughts on this):

* Sell my main PC: i7 860 proc, Intel DP55WG mobo, 4gb ddr3
* Sell my almost never used PS3

* Buy a FX-4100 + mobo + 4gb ddr3 - as my new main
* Buy a A4-3400 + mobo + (still got 2gb laying here) - for my wife
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Will the main PC will be powerfull enough? I've got an HD6870 & OCZ sata-3 SSD inside it.
And will the A4-3400 be enough for some simple gaming on med-resolution?

Maybe I should an FM1 socket processor in my main instead?

I really like for both systems to be upgradable in the future (processor -whise).

I dont think i would sell the i7 rig to mve to bulldozer unless your plan is to sell the i7 for more than you spend on the bulldozer. That said a couple of points are worth pointing out.

If you only play lower end games then either of your existing rigs should be good, the HD 6870 is still a good card even for modern games. I can play battlefield 3 on a HD 5770.

If you are buying any new pc rigs, at the minute Intel i5 or i7 are still unbeatable for the money with the best gaming cpu being the 2500k which is easily OC'ed to 4.5GHz.

If you want to stay with AMD and i understand why people do, my choice instead of the bulldozer would be the 1100T or 1090T, they cost less and are still very powerful.

If you give me some answers and some more detail I will be able to add more to this discussion.

As you asked, I will try to be a little more specific. I won't be running new games on ultra-high res (specially not on my wife's computer).

Things that the computers will be used for:

Main

• Gaming, a lot retro
• Running one / two simultaneous VM images
• Photo- & video editing

Alt

• Light gaming
• Some webdesign
• Word processing & Excel

I want to add as little money as possible, since I'm on a tight budget a.t.m. for the arcade machine .
It seems I'm able to get approx. 200 euro for my i7+mobo+mem. That is why I'm mostly looking at AMD. But, it will be my first experience -ever- with an AMD system.. so.. hehehe.

The new machines must be on a socket(s) that have a future (for upgrades). You mentioned the 1090T, is that on a socket that will remain used for a while?

So for my wife's system it seems usefull to me that it has built in video (onboard or on processor like FM1 socket). Two ddr3 slots is okay. Four would be great though.

For myself I'd like to have 4 or more cores and the guarantee I can keep the mobo for a 'long' time. Also 4 ddr3 slots are a pre for this system.

Why not just keep your current i7 rig which sounds like a good setup and work on your partners system instead. I don't think I would sell the i7 at the minute knowing what you intend to use it for. Run with it for a year at least and then maybe look at Intels new CPU lineup in 2012.

Well, the whole issue is: I need a system for my wife, so I wanted to sell my system so we can (almost) buy two systems for that instead (have the other hardware).
